Meeting Health Insurance Agent Demand: Is Your Organization Prepared?

Forecasting demand is a challenging aspect of a health insurance leader’s role, but one that can improve your ability to prepare for potential increases. One area to forecast, if you don’t already, is future staffing needs. Based on projections, there will be an increased demand for insurance sales agents in the next decade,1 so providing staff with Licensed Health Agent training can help meet demands for these roles.

Insurance Agent Job Outlook

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects that insurance sales agent positions will increase by 6% between 2023 and 2033, resulting in the creation of roughly 33,400 new jobs during this time.1 While life, property, auto, and home insurance agents are included in this category and the growth figures presented here, so too are agents who help consumers find and purchase health insurance policies for themselves and their families.

Not only are a large number of Americans living without healthcare coverage but this situation is expected to get worse. By 2034, an estimated 8.9% of the population will likely be uninsured, an increase from 2024’s rate of 7.7%, with those in the 19 to 44 age range among the most likely to be uninsured.2

Why Train Your Employees as Health Insurance Agents?

The phrase “health insurance agent” may conjure images of a salesperson at a health insurance company or an independent health insurance broker. Certainly, both are accurate. However, there are also benefits for other healthcare organizations when they invest in upskilling, reskilling, or cross-training staff as licensed health insurance agents that extend beyond meeting future demand.

  • Expanded patient services. Your patients already come to you for your products and/or services. Imagine how much more you can help them by also offering them access to trained individuals who can help them select a health insurance plan that aligns with their healthcare needs and budget.
  • Better patient care. One survey found that more than half of consumers had a problem using their health insurance during the prior year, some of which led to their healthcare claims being denied or worse: experiencing a denial or delay in care. Helping patients understand what is covered by their policy (and what isn’t) can help them avoid these issues.
  • More skilled employees. Offering employees licensed health agent training helps them aquire skills that can help them in the healthcare position they hold with your organization, particularly if they deal with patient billing or insurance.
